2019: The End of a Year, and a Decade

The year has come to an end. I take some time to reflect on it, including touching on some of my favourite animes I watched this year.

It’s been another year. A lot has happened in this past year, and I think I’ll take a little bit of time to reflect on it. I do something like this annually in point form on facebook, but I’ll take

So this year was my fifth year in university as an undergraduate student at Simon Fraser University. I finished my degree in Engineering Science at the end of August, majoring in the Computer Engineering option, and I’m proud to say that I graduated first class with distinction (cumulative GPA 4.00+/4.33), and convocated in early October. It was a difficult feat to achieve, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of family, friends, and the anime club I was part of.

I always talk about the anime club, and I’m really proud to say that I was not only a part of it, but also helped it along the way. I’m not really good with event and people management, but I do like to get my hands dirty with technical things, so I did what I could to help out with our Discord bot, and tried making a timelapse at one of our events. My motto is “work hard, play hard”, and I think I was able to do it adequately within the club. I was able to find someone willing to help out with the bot (KaguneAstra) and although he’s still new to this thing, I have hopes that he will be able to use this opportunity to not only learn, but to contribute back to a club that is such a good influence to him :youKnow:

Next, I got to travel on my own for the first time: to Japan. Well, that’s not entirely true: I went with my bro, but still. It was a really good experience, and I definitely want to go back again in 2020! I still have a few other blog posts I’m working on, so hopefully I’ll have them out soon.

I’m now employed full time as a software engineer back at my previous co-op placement, and I’m proud to work at my company. They’re based in the US with an office here in Burnaby, BC. It was a little rough when one of my mentor left right after I started, but I think I’ve gotten into the groove of things, so I’m happy to be part of a team where I can contribute with my set of skills.

With money now, I am saving some more and seeing what I can do with it. Of course, one of the things I love is anime, so throwing money back at it is something I will continue to do, whether that be at figures, CDs or other merch. The most important thing for me is to ensure that I budget it right, which clearly still has some problems cause I have over $1k in figure preorders next year, namely Azuki and Coconut from NEKOPARA.

For this year, my favourite anime were Goutoubun no Hanayome, Manaria Friends, and Release The Spyce (okay it aired last year, but I only found out about it this past May, so it still counts). I definitely didn’t watch as much as I did last year, but I did go back and rewatch some older ones, like Kaminomi zo Shiru Sekai (The World God Only Knows), and currently Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata (How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend). Heck, I didn’t even watch the second season of Saekano, so I’m finishing that as the new year starts.

Aside from this year, this past decade has been pretty interesting. I’ve had this blog for over 10 years now, and reminiscing on those older posts were pretty weird. I’ve definitely grown as a person since then, and I’m both excited and scared to see what the future has to offer.

As I post this entry, I’ll be ending off the year by hanging out with some friends before the final countdown.

Until next year!
